What we do

  • Publish Geographical Research, a journal of international standing issued four times a year through Wiley.
  • Produce a Newsletter which appears three times a year.
  • Hold an annual conference, usually in July, that rotates around Australia and New Zealand. The 2018 conference is to be held in Auckland. Every few years the conference is held in association with the New Zealand Geographical Society.
  • Support Study Groups in specialist areas of geography.
  • Recognise outstanding individual contributions to geography and the IAG through a variety of awards.
  • Make submissions on behalf of geography and geographers on matters such as human research ethics, geography in secondary schools, the statistical classification of geographical research, and the assessment of research impact.
  • Promote the position of geography in Australian universities.
  • Support and encourage postgraduate students, the next generation of geographers. The IAG awards prizes for research papers submitted for publication in Geographical Research by Honours and postgraduate students, gives commendation certificates for the best postgraduate paper presentations at conferences, provides travel grants for postgraduates to attend its conferences, and supports a postgraduate day at each conference.
  • Maintain the IAG-List, an electronic noticeboard.
  • Maintain this website, as an important means of communicating Australian geography. The website includes a database on members and their expertise and interests, which is searchable by members.
