New call for Physical Geographers to serve on the Editorial Board of the journal Geographical Research

1st September 2017
By Elaine Stratford

Geographical Research is the journal of the Institute of Australian Geographers. Elaine Stratford, the Editor-in-Chief, and Ian Rutherfurd, the President of the Institute of Australian Geographers, now jointly seek expressions of interest for two physical geographers to serve as Editorial Associates, and join the human geographers on the team, and for up to six physical geographers to join the Editorial Board.

For both roles, please read the descriptions below. Then, specifying the role/s for which you wish to be considered, submit no more than two pages addressing those descriptions, explaining your motivation. Add a three-page CV highlighting elements of your career relevant to the role. Please note that we take a broad view of what is defined as a physical geographer.

Please send this five-page document as one PDF jointly to Professor Elaine Stratford, Elaine.Stratford@utas.edu.au, and Associate Professor Ian Rutherfurd, idruth@unimelb.edu.au,  by close of business on 30 September 2017. Selection will be made by the end of October. Thank you for considering this opportunity, and we look forward to your expressions of interest.

Expression of Interest – Associate Editors – Physical Geography streams

Having provided strong support for Geographical Research for several years, Brian Finlayson and Wayne Stephenson are retiring as Associate Editors.  The Associate Editors will have a physical geography specialisation and the capacity to assess papers from other parts of geography and allied fields. They will be:

·       highly committed to geography and have a deep curiosity about allied fields;

·       passionate about reading, writing, publishing, and promoting the discipline widely;

·       able to work with a small team over distance;

·       able to devote four to eight hours a week to editorial duties including, but not limited to:

o   selecting reviewers;

o   liaising with reviewers and authors;

o   soliciting papers of all kinds produced by the journal; and

o   helping to assess special/themed/virtual issue proposals; and

·       able to travel to one annual meeting, typically in late January or early February.

Expression of Interest – Editorial Board Members

The editorial team of Geographical Research is ably supported by a strongly qualified and diverse Editorial Board. Some long-serving members of the Board have recently retired from academic life, and from the Editorial Board, and that provides an opportunity to augment an already-strong membership. We now seek expressions of interest for up to six physical geographers to serve on the Editorial Board. Membership has no end date, but periodically, the editorial team will invite members to advise us about their capacity to continue to commit to the journal and we reserve the right to thank under-active members for their service and relieve them of that duty.

Like our new Associate Editor, new members of the Editorial Board will be:

·       highly committed to geography and have a deep curiosity about allied fields;

·       passionate about reading, writing, publishing, and promoting the discipline locally, nationally, and internationally;

·       able to work with the editorial team over distance;

·       in a position to:

o   review between one and five papers a year on average;

o   write one book review and one virtual issue approximately every three years on average;

o   submit papers or participate in book panel papers for the journal;

o   assist the editors to determine the worth of special and themed issues;

o   solicit papers from colleagues for meritorious work at, for example, conferences; and

·       willing to join occasional meetings of the Board at international conferences such as the AAG, RGS/IBG, IAG, and combined IAG/NZGS meetings.
