Abstract:
Fire is calling us. Fire’s gentle and calm whispers of smoke are becoming louder. Wildfire sends advance notice with Big Smoke as raging flames causes Country to scream and cry in pain. What is Fire trying to teach us? Can we learn to listen? Lauren Tynan, Rob Anders and Jessica Riley are Tasmanian Aboriginal kin with strong ancestral connections to Tebrakunna Country, of the Coastal Plains nation in northeast Trouwerner (Tasmania). They have been listening to fire and other elements across our Country. We are each involved in different aspects of caring for Country and the discipline of geography. From these experiences we will introduce Fire as a relational entity, with agency and deep knowledges to share with us. We will also speak to the structures of colonising land management that are trying to suppress or contain Fire, and the research that is trying to change this. The yarn will be alive with many stories of cultural burning and land management practices that are being rekindled.
