Medals & Awards
The IAG makes a number of awards. The most prestigious are the Griffith Taylor Medal named after the first Professor of Geography in an Australian University, and the Australia-International Medal. The first is for contributions to geography in Australia, while the second is for contributions by Australian geographers to geography world-wide, or by geographers outside Australia to the geography of Australia.
In 2018, IAG Council introduced a number of new awards including:
- The IAG ‘ATLAS’ - The IAG Award for Teaching Leadership And Scholarship
- The IAG 'PLACE'- The IAG Presidents’ Leadership Award for Contribution by an Early career scholar
- The William Jonas Award - The Prize is awarded for excellence in significant contributions made to Indigenous geographies and/or to the discipline of geography made by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander geographers.
- The IAG Award for Dissertation Excellence - The award recognises excellence in a dissertation. The dissertation may be in any field of geographic scholarship. The dissertation may form part of an Honours, Masters or PhD programme.
Honorary Life Membership is the final award that the Institute can confer on members.
Until 2007 the Institute also had a Professional Service Award, but this has now been incorporated into the Distinguished Fellowships.
The closing date for all nominations is Friday 17 April, 2020
